SANGHO LEE
Sangho LEE studied ceramics at universities in Korea and Japan. Under the theme of “Korean aesthetics manifest in irregular forms,” Lee creates craft-style tableware and objets d ’art that straddle the boundaries between design and art, with his work encompassing all genres of ceramic art forms.
Since the launch of his brand in 2011, the artist has steadily released a wide range of ceramic products and series. In 2017, he was selected as a Lexus Creative Master, and his work is featured at department stores, museums, and five-star hotels in Korea. Furthermore, his tableware, which is at the forefront of the design realm, and his irregularly shaped objet d’art series have been displayed at a diverse range of international venues, including Maison & Objet Paris and the Hong Kong Art Fair. Lee’s ceramic art is an attempt to reflect the spirit of the contemporary era.

What does the Artist think the spirit of craftsmanship is?
A closer look at the decorations and shapes of the Joseon Dynasty reveals the values and culture of that era. If you deal with a material for a long time, you develop the skills to express it in your own language. I believe that craftsmanship is about expressing contemporary values using the artist’s own language created while using traditional materials.

What determines the value as craft and the value as design?
Crafts are traditional things based on traditions that have been passed down for a long time. decorative and handcrafted I think these two are general values for crafts. In the case of design, I believe that the value comes from a planned structure that comes from matching beauty and function. Of course, I believe that the value of craft and design is not a concept with a fixed meaning, but changes with the times. In my work, I often use the term border between craft and design because I borrow the decorative elements and handicraft parts of craft, and the planned part about the function of design.
